one of my most favorite things to do is wander through a new place. i don't particularly care to see the popular sites, but instead prefer to wander through her streets and seek out details to piece together how a place "feels" to me. and my most favorite way to do this is by looking through my lens. it's funny because the hubs is much more about checking off the sites (although i think my way, he now comes to understand better). i watch, observe, and look for little things that catch my eye as we walk down streets. i listen, sometimes closing my eyes, to capture the soundtrack of a place a little more clearly.
we recently wandered through a couple hill towns - orvieto and assisi. there hasn't been a hill town in italy that i haven't liked -- i just prefer some over others. as was the case between these two towns, i much preferred orvieto. i loved the art that seemed to line the streets, especially the whimsical wooden creations that could be found nearly everywhere. maybe it was the light, the time of day, the fact my pirates were rested and enjoying the outing...who can say, but i loved this town.
assisi is also quite beautiful - rich with deep historical and religious roots. the light on this hill town was exquisite in the morning and at dusk. italy and her lighting - it is nothing short of magical and takes my breath away...still.
i love the newness of traveling, even if it is just a short trip away. that feeling of being temporarily out of your element and away from your comfort zone; it adds a bit of electricity into the air and into your spirit.
